Anyone thinking that Boca Raton is pretentious hasn't
been to Holloway's Pub in the Royal Palm Plaza shopping center just
south of Palmetto Park Road and east of Federal Highway. Unassuming,
comfortable and customer friendly is this little bit of Ireland
where visitors are welcomed with a smile.

Karaoke nights hosted by Frank-E on Tuesdays and Saturdays are
so popular people often spill out of the small bar and grill to the
tables placed outside. This is when neighborhood folk gather to show
off their singing ability as Frank-E provides the musical background
and lyrical prompting.
Fridays and Wednesdays, acoustic
guitarist/vocalist and excellent entertainer Walt Rooney sings Irish
songs such as
Drunken Sailor, Black Velvet Band and even
Danny Boy. He usually enthralls his audience; hand clapping
and smiling faces are normal responses to his performances. Able to
play almost anything with verve and vigor, he took requests for
American songs as well, especially Jimmy Buffett
covers.
Holloway's is a narrow enclosure with room for a pool
table and dart boards in a back area, tables covered with
green-and-white-checkered cloth, and a bar up front. Rooney played
in a corner by the door, visible to all. Holloway's customers like
to share, bringing in photos from trips to Ireland and other Irish
mementos used as wall decorations.
Food is served until
closing at this family-run bistro and includes light bites such as
Irish stew ($7.95) and a Turkey Tortilla Wrap ($7.95). Four Irish
beers are on tap, along with a large assortment of domestic ($3 a
bottle) and imported beers ($3.75, $4.50 for Guinness).
March
17, Holloway's celebrates St. Patrick's Day in a big way. Expect
tents outside featuring beer barrels, corned beef and cabbage,
Rooney performing from early afternoon to late night, bagpipe
players and dancers from Harling Irish Dance
Academy.
